Daily itinerary:
Day
1
Arrive
to the town of Clifden (direct bus service or we can help arrange a taxi),
often called the Capital of Connemara, which is located amidst the
breathtaking mountain scenery and beautiful coastline of Ireland's western
region known as Connemara. Clifden is a modern, self-sufficient, thriving
town and popular tourist destination.
You will get a warm welcome and chance to settle in. A Killary
Tours representative will meet you to allocate bikes and give you your
route pack and general information. Dinner
is your own choice in one of the many restaurants that Clifden has to
offer.
Day
2
You
leave Clifden to day heading for Roundstone, a small picturesque fishing
village. It offers wonderful views over its harbour with the Twelve Bens
as background. You will cycle along Mannin Bay, with its coralline beach -
heaven for the beachcomber - and past Ballyconneely.
There are a number of restaurants in the village of Roundstone
where you can choose to have your dinner.
Day
3
Leave
Roundstone to cycle to Cashel (17km), wonderfully situated at the top of
Bertraghboy Bay. It was one of the holiday destinations for the French
President General de Gaulle. The route for most of the day will take you
along the shores of the Atlantic and the various bays. Stay the night in
B&B, where the lady of the house will cook for you.
Day
4
From
Cashel you will cycle today back to Toombeola and take the Bog Road to
Clifden. You cycle through
Roundstone Bog, which offers superb scenery and a true ecological
adventure, with large bog pools and many rare plants along the roadside. You make your way back to the town of Clifden.
If arriving in the early afternoon you may wish to take some time
to explore the many shops and restaurants in the town of Clifden, or
perhaps, cycle out as far as Dan O’ Hara’s Homestead.
This
award winning heritage centre is situated on the N59 approximately 8km
from Clifden. It offers a
unique insight into the history and heritage of this most beautiful part
of the West of Ireland. You
stay in Clifden again to night where dinner is your own choice.
Day
5
Your
destination today is the village of Cleggan.
This is a small fishing village, nesting at the head of Cleggan
way. Cleggan is the port of
departure for Inishbofin and Inishturk islands.
Your shortest route is about 15km but you have the option of
cycling around the Sky Road, which offers wonderful views over the Ocean,
Clifden Bay and the many islands that lie in it.
This route also leads you past the ruin of Darcy’s Castle.
You stay in Cleggan village for the next two nights.
Dinner is your own choice from the village.
Day
6
Today
will be an all day excursion to the island Inishbofin off the coast of
Cleggan. You will leave your
bikes behind you today and take the ferry from Cleggan Pier.
Inishbofin is one of the most beautiful islands off the west coast.
Today it has a population of about 200 people, but was chosen in
655 by St Coleman for the site of his monastery, as it was a place of tranquility. There
are wonderful walks and nice beaches.
Return to Cleggan on the evening ferry from Inishbofin.
Dinner is your own choice again this evening.
Day
7
Leaving
Cleggan your cycle will bring you to Renvyle via Moyard and Letterfrack.
Letterfrack is home to Connemara National Park, one of six National
Parks in Ireland. The Park grounds are open all year round and
the Visitor Centre is open from mid-March to mid-October. In the
Park's Visitor Centre there are 3-D exhibitions of the Connemara
landscape, audio-visual show, tearoom, nature trails, and an annual summer
programme. You are staying
tonight in a B&B in the village of Tully/Tullycross on the Renvyle
Peninsula. Dinner is your own
choice.
Day
8
Breakfast,
followed by farewell and departure!
There
is a direct bus service to Galway city throughout the year on Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturdays from Tullycross.
