Daily itinerary:
DAY
1
Arrive
to the wonderful town of Westport (there is direct bus and train service to
Westport daily). Warm welcome
and chance to settle in. You will be given your route pack and general
information to study overnight. If there is time we will allocate bikes and
equipment. Westport is a nice
town with lots of restaurants and pubs where you can find music on most
evenings.
DAY 2
You
leave Westport today to cycle to Cong.
You depart after breakfast via Aghagower, Toormakeady, Lough Mask,
Finny and Clonbur to Cong (58kms). A
long cycle, but in beautiful countryside on a lot of quite roads. Cong is
famous as the location for the film “The Quiet Man”, as well as being
home to Ashford Castle and many antiquities. Stay the night in B&B,
dinner again not included.
DAY
3
From
Cong, your target today is the village of Leenane.
You depart after breakfast to cycle to Killary Harbour, passing
through the Maam Valley (43km). You
cycle through Joyce’s Country. A fairly straight road, although a longer
option on this day will be taking you over a variety of passes through the
Mountains. The village of
Leenane is snugly situated at the head of Irelands only fjord Killary Fjord.
It is well known in the last couple of years for the filming of John
B. Keane’s famous play “ The Field”, directed by Jim Sheridan and
starring Richard Harris and John Hurt.
There is a couple of pubs and restaurants in the village where you
can have a very enjoyable evening.
DAY 4
You
are heading back to Westport today, and your cycling route will take you via
Leenane, Aasleagh Waterfalls to Westport (45km - with longer options). You
are passing through a valley between the Sheefry and Partry Mountains. You
stay the night again in a guesthouse and choose dinner in one of the
restaurants.
DAY 5
